Privacy Policy

1. What we collect

Biographer is not for children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from them. Your stories may mention other people, including children; you're responsible for what you choose to share about them.

2. What we do with it

We use your information to run your account, keep you signed in, store and organize your stories, generate content for you — interview questions, transcripts, summaries, written drafts, and illustrations, both when you ask and as you go — fill book orders, send you emails and texts about your stories (including reminders to come back, which you can unsubscribe from at any time), respond when you contact us, understand how Biographer is used, improve the product, measure our marketing, and comply with the law. Improving Biographer can include our team reviewing content and using it internally to develop and refine features.

We may also publish short excerpts of stories to show others what Biographer can do. A person on our team reviews each one first and removes or changes anything that could identify you or the people in it, and we never attach your name. You can turn this off in Settings at any time, and we'll take down anything of yours already published.

We also use AI to review conversations for quality, for example to notice when a conversation was frustrating or upsetting, so we can make the interviewer better. Our team reads a sample of these reviews. They're never shown to anyone outside Biographer.

We do not sell your information, and we do not share your stories with anyone who is not helping us run Biographer, apart from the anonymized excerpts described above. We do share limited information with advertising platforms to measure our marketing — see section 4.

3. How we use AI

Biographer is built on third-party AI services. These include AI model providers, a speech-to-text provider, and text-to-speech providers. We'll give you the current list if you ask. We use them to generate interview questions, transcribe what you say, write drafts and summaries, understand and illustrate your photos, and give the interviewer its voice. To do that, we send the relevant parts of your material — interview messages, biographical details, photos, and voice recordings — to those providers so they can process it for us. When you speak with Biographer, your audio may stream directly from your browser to a speech-to-text provider. We don't build or train our own AI models on your content.

AI gets things wrong. It can misremember dates, invent details, or miss the point. Read what it writes before you treat it as accurate or share it with family.

4. Who we share with

• Service providers. The companies that power Biographer: hosting, databases, file storage, email delivery, sign-in, AI and speech services, analytics, payments, printing, and error monitoring. They only receive what they need to do their work for us. Those that may handle your account information (name, email, and profile photo) are Render (hosting and database), Cloudflare (network and file storage), Resend (email delivery), PostHog (product analytics), and Sentry (error monitoring). Twilio (text messaging) receives your phone number and the texts we exchange with you. If you subscribe, Stripe (payments) receives your name, email, and billing address. If you order a book, Stripe receives your name, email, phone, and address, and Lulu (printing) receives those details plus your book to print it.
• Advertising platforms. To measure whether our ads work, we share limited information with advertising platforms like Meta and Google — things like a scrambled (hashed) version of your email and account ID, your IP address and browser type, advertising cookie IDs, and campaign identifiers. We also tell Meta when you start a free trial or first pay for a subscription, with the amount. Your stories are never part of this. If you'd like us to exclude you from this measurement, email privacy@thebiographer.com .
• Biographer staff. A small number of people on our team may access account and story content — which can include reading stories, reading conversations, listening to recordings, and signing in as you to fix a problem — to provide support, fix bugs, and improve quality.
• People you choose. If you share a story, that's your decision. A share link is a public web address: anyone who has the link can view that content. We ask search engines not to list share links, and you can turn a link off at any time. If you add a collaborator, they can see your photos and finished stories. Think before you share, and about who might pass the link along.
• Legal requirements. If we receive a valid legal request, or if someone's safety is at risk, we may have to disclose information.
• A future owner. If Biographer is acquired or merged, your information would move with it. This policy would still apply until it is updated.

5. How long we keep it

While your account is open, we keep your stories — text, recordings, and photos — so you can return to them. If you delete a single chapter, we hide it from your account; email us if you want it permanently removed. If you delete your account, we delete your account and content records from our active systems. Residual copies, including backups and stored media files, may persist in our systems afterward, and we may retain limited records where the law requires it. Stripe and Lulu keep their own records of subscriptions and book orders, and we keep the free trial records described above. If you want to be sure something is fully gone, email us and we'll help.

6. Your choices

• Edit your profile from inside the app.
• Unsubscribe from reminder and newsletter emails using the link in any of them. We'll still send emails about your account, subscription, invitations, and orders.
• Stop texts at any time by replying STOP.
• Download your book as a PDF.
• Disable cookies in your browser. Biographer may not work as well if you do.
• Ask us to exclude you from advertising measurement, as described in section 4.
• Request access to, correction of, or deletion of your data. Email privacy@thebiographer.com and we will respond. This applies whether or not you have an account — if someone has told stories about you or invited you, you can ask us about that too.
• If you are in California, the EU, the UK, or another jurisdiction with strong privacy laws, you may have additional rights. Email us and we will help.

7. Security

We use encryption in transit, access controls, and other standard safeguards to protect your information. No online service is perfectly secure.

8. Where your data lives

Biographer is based in the United States, and that is where your information is stored and processed. If you are outside the US, using Biographer means your data is transferred here.

9. Changes to this policy

If we change this policy in a meaningful way, we will update the date at the top and, for larger changes, notify you in the app or by email. Continuing to use Biographer after a change means the updated policy applies.
