Privacy Policy
Last updated: April 10, 2026
This policy explains what Boswell does with your information. Boswell is made by Biographer, Inc. ("we" or "us"), and it helps you capture your life stories through guided conversations and turn them into something you'll want to keep. We take your trust seriously - the stories you share here are personal, and we've tried to write this policy the way we'd want one written for us.
Using Boswell means you're okay with what's described here. If you're not, please don't use it.
1. What we collect
Stuff you give us directly
- Your account. Your name, email, and profile photo. If you sign up with a password, we store a scrambled version of it (a "hash"), not the password itself. If you sign in with Google, we get the basics Google shares with us - name, email, profile picture.
- Your stories. Everything you put into Boswell: the answers you give during interviews, the topics you pick, the notes you bookmark, and the biographical details you add about yourself or the people you're writing about.
- What Boswell writes back. The follow-up questions, summaries, and draft prose that Boswell generates from your material. That content lives in your account alongside everything else.
- Messages to us. Anything you send us when you email for help or share feedback.
Stuff we pick up automatically
- Basic technical info. Your IP address, browser, device type, what pages you visited, and when. The usual stuff any website sees.
- Cookies. We use cookies to keep you logged in, remember your preferences, and keep the app working properly. Nothing fancy, nothing for ad tracking.
Boswell isn't meant for kids under 13, and we don't knowingly collect information from them.
2. What we do with it
We use your information to run your account and keep you signed in securely, save your stories and keep them organized, generate interview questions and written drafts for you, answer your questions when you write to us, figure out what's broken and make Boswell better, and follow the law when we have to.
We don't sell your information. We don't use it to train outside ad networks. We don't share your stories with anyone who isn't helping us run Boswell.
3. How the AI part works
Boswell uses AI models from outside companies (like OpenAI and Anthropic) to generate interview questions and written drafts. To do that, we send your prompts and the relevant parts of your subject to those providers. They process it on our behalf to create the response, and they're not allowed to use it to train their own models.
AI makes mistakes. Sometimes it gets dates wrong, invents details, or misses the point. Read anything it writes before you treat it as true or share it with family.
4. Who else sees your information
A short list. We share information only with:
- Companies that help us run Boswell. Our hosting provider, our database, our email service, and the AI providers mentioned above. They only get what they need to do their job.
- People on the Boswell team. A small number of us - engineering, support, and editorial staff - can access account and story content when we need to help you, fix a bug, or improve quality. We try to keep this minimal and we treat what we see as confidential.
- Anyone you tell us to. If you use a feature to share or export a story, that's you choosing to share it.
- The law, if we have to. If we get a valid legal request, or if someone's safety is at risk, we may have to hand over information.
- A future owner. If Boswell is ever acquired or merged into another company, your information would move with it, and this policy would still apply until it's updated.
5. How long we keep it
While your account is open, we keep your stories so you can come back to them. If you delete your account, we delete your content from our active systems. Copies may stick around in backups for a little while before they age out, and we may hold on to limited records if the law requires it.
6. Your choices
- Edit your profile from inside the app whenever you want.
- Turn off cookies in your browser if you'd like. Boswell may not work as smoothly if you do.
- Ask for your data, fix it, or delete it. Email privacy@thebiographer.com and we'll take care of it.
- Extra rights where you live. If you're in California, the EU, the UK, or somewhere else with strong privacy laws, you may have additional rights. Email us and we'll sort it out.
7. Security
We use reasonable technical and organizational safeguards to protect your information - encryption in transit, access controls, the usual good practices. But no system is perfectly secure, and we won't pretend otherwise.
8. Where your data lives
Boswell is based in the United States, and that's where your information is stored and processed. If you're outside the US, using Boswell means your data travels here.
9. Changes to this policy
If we change this policy in a meaningful way, we'll update the date at the top and, for bigger changes, let you know in the app or by email. Continuing to use Boswell after a change means the new version applies.
