Terms of Service

1. Who can use Biographer

You need to be able to enter into a contract where you live, and you can't be banned from using our kind of service under the law. If you're under 18, a parent or guardian needs to be involved.

2. Your account

To use most of Biographer, you'll need an account. Give us accurate information, keep your Google, Facebook, or email account secure, and update your details if they change. Whatever happens under your account is your responsibility, so don't share your sign-in links.

You can create an account with Google, or with your email address when someone invites you. If you sign in with Google or Facebook, their terms apply to that part too.

If you give us your phone number, we'll send you texts from Biographer: a confirmation when you verify your number, then no more than two a day of our own, plus our answers when you text us. Message and data rates may apply. Reply STOP to stop them at any time, or HELP for help.

3. What Biographer is

Biographer helps you collect and organize your life stories through guided interviews you can type or speak, photos and albums, topic prompts, and AI-assisted writing. We store your interview messages and voice recordings, photos, biographical details, summaries, drafts, and the stories we put together for you.

You can start talking with Biographer for free. Once your first story has been written, talking with Biographer needs a subscription, and your book always does (see section 7). Some things cost extra, like a printed hardcover book or some Creations. We'll always show you the price before you pay. We're still building Biographer, so we may change, add, remove, or pause features as we go — or, if we ever have to, wind the service down. We can't promise the product will always work or look the same, so keep copies of anything you can't afford to lose.

4. Your stories belong to you

The stories, answers, recordings, photos, and biographical material you put into Biographer ("your content") are yours. We don't claim ownership of any of it.

That said, we need your permission to actually run the product. By using Biographer, you give us a license to host and store your content, back it up, transcribe your recordings, send the relevant pieces to the third-party providers that power Biographer (like AI and speech services), create things from it inside the product — questions, summaries, drafts, extracted biographical details, illustrations, and audio — display it back to you and to the people you choose to share it with, send it to our printing partner to make a book when you order one, and use it to operate and improve Biographer.

If you record your voice for us, or ask us to use the recordings you have already made, you also let us recreate your voice with a speech provider so it can read your own stories aloud when you ask. We only use your recreated voice for what you ask it to read, we say it is a recreated voice wherever it plays, and you can delete your recordings at any time; the recreated voice goes with them.

We may also use information in de-identified or aggregated form — stripped of anything that identifies you — to understand and improve how Biographer works.

Sometimes a story is too good not to share. We may publish excerpts of your stories — on our website, in emails, or on social media — to show others what Biographer can do. Before anything is published, a person on our team reviews it and removes or changes anything that could identify you or the people in your story, including names, places, employers, and dates. We will never attach your name to a published story. If you'd rather we never use your stories this way, turn off story sharing in Settings or email support@thebiographer.com, and we'll also take down anything of yours we've already published.

You also need to promise that you have the right to share what you put in — that goes for copyrighted material, and for information and photos of other people. Your stories are about real people; it's on you to be fair to them and to have permission where you need it.

5. About the AI

Biographer uses third-party AI models to generate questions, summaries, and drafts. Sometimes it writes a draft on its own after a conversation, so there's something to read when you come back. You can edit it, rewrite it, or delete it. AI gets things wrong. It invents details, misremembers dates, and sometimes produces stuff that's just off. Read what it writes before you trust it, publish it, print it, or share it with family — especially when the story is about someone real.

6. Sharing and inviting others

You can share chapters, stories, and other content with a share link. A share link is a public web address: anyone who has it can view that content. We ask search engines not to list share links, but anyone you give a link to can pass it on. You can turn off a link at any time. You decide what to share and who to give the link to.

You can also add a collaborator: someone you trust to help manage your photos and who can read your finished stories. Collaborators can't interview you, write for you, or publish in your name. Add only people you trust with that access.

You can also invite someone else to tell their story. When you do, you give us their name and email so we can reach out, plus any background you add to prepare their experience. We'll send them a few emails about the invitation. Only invite people you actually know, and only share information about them you're comfortable standing behind.

7. Your subscription and printed books

Your subscription

• Plans. A subscription is $9.99 a month or $89 a year, plus any sales tax, which we show at checkout before you pay. Payments are processed by Stripe; we never see your full card number.
• Your first story. If you're new, you can talk with Biographer for free until your first story is written. You'll see its title and opening; to read the whole story and keep talking with Biographer, start your free week or a subscription.
• Your free week. Each person can have one free seven-day trial, once per email address and once per phone number. We ask for your card when the trial starts and charge nothing during it. If you don't cancel before the seven days are up, your subscription begins and your card is charged for the plan you chose.
• Early storytellers. If your account was created before September 29, 2026, you get a free year: Biographer is free for you until September 29, 2027, and you don't need to give us a card. After that, you'll need a subscription to keep telling stories. If you choose a plan before then, we won't charge you until your free year ends. The free year replaces the free week, so early storytellers don't also get one.
• Automatic renewal. Your subscription renews automatically at the end of each month or year, and we charge the card on file until you cancel. If the price of your plan changes, we'll tell you before it applies to you.
• Canceling. You can cancel anytime from Settings, under Manage billing. Canceling stops the next renewal; you keep access until the end of the period you've paid for, or until your free week ends. Cancel during your free week and you won't be charged at all. We don't refund partial periods, but if something has gone wrong, write to support@thebiographer.com and we'll help.
• If a payment fails. You keep access for three days while we try your card again. After that, your subscription pauses until you update your card.
• Without a subscription. Your stories stay yours and stay safe. Until you first start a plan (including a free week), your stories show their title and opening, and can't be shared or made into Creations. Once you've started a plan, you can always read and share your stories, even after it ends. Without a plan you can still see your photos and Creations, choose a plan, manage billing, and delete your account, and stories you've shared stay readable by the people you shared them with. Talking with Biographer and your book, including its PDF, wait until you have a plan.
• Annual discount on your first book. If you have a paid annual subscription, your first printed book is 25% off. It's applied at checkout automatically, once per account. It doesn't apply during a free week or free year.
• Family. People who only read or contribute to someone else's Biography don't need a subscription. Anyone telling their own stories needs their own, including someone who was invited to tell their story.

Buying a printed book

• Price. We show the full price, including shipping and any sales tax, at checkout before you pay. Payments are processed by Stripe; we never see your full card number.
• Where we ship. We currently ship to addresses in the United States only.
• What gets printed. Your book is printed from the version you preview and approve at checkout. You're responsible for checking it first, including anything the AI wrote.
• Changing or canceling. Each book is made to order. We hold your order for 24 hours before it goes to print. To change or cancel it during that time, reply to your order confirmation email or write to support@thebiographer.com. Once printing has started, we can't cancel it.
• Refunds. If we can't deliver to the address you gave and it isn't corrected within 7 days, we'll cancel the order and refund you in full. If the printer can't make your book, we'll refund you in full.

8. Things not to do

Don't use Biographer to break the law, defraud people, or hurt anyone. Don't upload content you don't have rights to. Don't try to hack us, scrape the site, or interfere with how the product runs. Don't reverse engineer Biographer to build a competitor.

9. Feedback

If you send us ideas or suggestions, we're allowed to use them to improve Biographer without owing you anything.

10. Other services we rely on

Biographer runs on top of other companies' tools — hosting, storage, email, sign-in, AI and speech services, analytics, payments, and printing. If one of those services has a problem or its own terms that apply to you, that's between you and them; we can't take responsibility for how they operate.

11. Ending things

You can stop using Biographer whenever you want, and you can delete your account from your settings. Deleting your account ends your subscription right away, without a refund for the rest of the period. If a book order is still being printed or shipped, you'll be able to delete your account once it's delivered or canceled. We can suspend or close your account if you're breaking these terms, putting us or other users at risk, or if the law requires it.

12. Our intellectual property

The Biographer software, design, name, and branding belong to us. You get to use the Service under these terms, but you don't get ownership of the product itself.

13. Disclaimers

Biographer is provided as is and as available. To the fullest extent allowed by law, we disclaim all warranties, express or implied, including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, title, and non-infringement. We don't guarantee that the Service will be uninterrupted, secure, error-free, or that anything the AI produces will be accurate or suitable for your purposes.

14. Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent allowed by law, Biographer and its people won't be liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for lost profits, revenue, data, goodwill, or business opportunities arising from your use of the Service. Our total liability for any claims related to Biographer or these Terms won't exceed the greater of $100 or the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim.

15. Indemnification

If someone comes after us because of something you uploaded, someone you invited or wrote about, something you did with Biographer you shouldn't have, or a violation of these terms, you agree to cover our costs — including reasonable legal fees.

16. Governing law and jurisdiction

These Terms are governed by New York law. If there's a legal dispute between us, it has to be handled in the state or federal courts in New York, New York, and you agree to that.

17. Changes to these terms

We may update these Terms now and then. If we do, we'll update the date at the top, and for meaningful changes we'll give you a heads-up in the app or by email. Continuing to use Biographer after a change means the new version applies.

18. General provisions

• Entire agreement. These Terms and the Privacy Policy are the complete agreement between you and us about Biographer.
• Severability. If a court decides one provision doesn't hold up, the rest still applies.
• Waiver. If we don't enforce something once, we haven't given up the right to enforce it later.
• Assignment. You can't hand your account or these Terms off to someone else without us agreeing. We can transfer them if we're acquired or merged.

19. Contact
